






I have a tendency to be a few months behind the latest photo shoots, merely because it takes such an exorbitant amount of time to discover anything truly innovative. All too often, shoots prove to be overly glossy and trite.
However, this March 2010 shoot from Vogue Italia, entitled The Great Illusion, is the exception. Before I delve into a dissertation about the matter, I’ll point out the hallmark of the shoot: the set design.Simon Costin has long been a favorite set designer of mine. With works ranging from opulent to macabre, cerebral to sinister or wistfully youthful, the breadth of his talents is a marvel. The above shots featuring Givenchy Haute Couture evoke a strong sense of eroticism, aristocracy and obscurity, courtesy of an array of frightful cast shadows and gloomy lighting. In all accounts, it is a brilliant shoot, widely lauded by fashion critics and myself alike.

Secondly, Costin’s equally innovative Vogue Nippon editorial. June 2009’s The Natural, alludes to voodoo and the occult.
