Normally, I am not one who indulges in opulent treasures. On a daily basis, my wardrobe and décor choices are characterized as minimalistic and simplistic. My room itself isn’t at all sparse, but it is a neutral tone with natural lighting. My clothing choices follow suit. It was not too long that I would have regarded the images above as overly garish and gaudy.

But as of late, I have begun to gravitate to more saturated tones and decadent pieces. Namely, stylized images of birds, as seen above:

First, a DeRosa vintage 1940's Peacock Cuff, via VintageLuxury.com. Gilt Metal, Enamel and fantastically saturated tones make up this cuff. Perfectly detailed and exquisite in design.

Secondly, this antique screen is supposedly from Japan, circa ? I wish that I had the ability to assess this antique’s age. My guess is the late 1880’s to early 1900’s. Irrespective of the fabrication date, I find the contrast between the birds and the background striking; the illustrations both realistic but ethereal.

Lastly, these images of James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room are a real sight. A pioneer of the Aestheticism movement, Whistler’s work inaugurated a vogue for the opulent and decadent. The influence of the Japanese culture, rich emerald greens and exquisite accents are sublime. If you are interested, I would highly recommend that you venture over to The Smithsonian's official site for more pictures and inspiration.

Yes, the ubiquitous "It – Girl" has reared ombre haired head again, this time for her Madewell collection. Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, then you are sure to have already been inundated with the hype. With the collection hitting stores in September, her people have decided to thrown us a bone, and release the official Madewell ads! Only two for the time being, but perhaps more will emerge?

Anyway, they’re pretty minimal, simplistic, youthful and sweet. Not to mention, I love the font. The first is fantastic – needless to say, I am sold on that velvet Peter Pan dress before I have event tried it on! The blazer is an excellent neutral shade and the ideal autumnal piece. The polka dot top? So-so. And those velvet high waisted shorts? Oh yes, I am hoping that they will be mine.

Luckily for me, there is a Madewell store not too far from my humble abode – as for everyone else? I think the stores are solely in the USA. Maybe I’ll scoop up a few pieces to put on eBay. Any requests?

I have a tendency to be a few months behind the latest photo shoots, merely because it takes such an exorbitant amount of time to discover anything truly innovative. All too often, shoots prove to be overly glossy and trite.
However, this March 2010 shoot from Vogue Italia, entitled The Great Illusion, is the exception. Before I delve into a dissertation about the matter, I’ll point out the hallmark of the shoot: the set design.Simon Costin has long been a favorite set designer of mine. With works ranging from opulent to macabre, cerebral to sinister or wistfully youthful, the breadth of his talents is a marvel. The above shots featuring Givenchy Haute Couture evoke a strong sense of eroticism, aristocracy and obscurity, courtesy of an array of frightful cast shadows and gloomy lighting. In all accounts, it is a brilliant shoot, widely lauded by fashion critics and myself alike.

Secondly, Costin’s equally innovative Vogue Nippon editorial. June 2009’s The Natural, alludes to voodoo and the occult.
Retrospectively, I probably chose this editorial because I was listening to “The Killing Moon”, and thought it was an apt shoot for

such a song! Or, and that fact that it is brilliant probably doesn’t hurt in the least.

his highly anticipated Fall Eyewear Campaign. This year, his eponymous line pays homage to "The Birds"

in a seemingly unorthodox , albeit brilliant collection. Featuring one of the decade's most sought after

faces, Freja Beha Erichsen and rising British actor Nicholas Hoult, the swank duo pose amongst a less

than affable assortment of ravens. Appearing panache while sporting large scale frames and balancing

said birds is no easy feat, but with Tom Ford, even the farfetched concepts are carried off with

unparalleled finesse.

American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a link to the extraordinary "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

It is unfathomable to me that garments from decades ago would maintain their appearance and beauty, as well as transcending time.

Equally opulent as they are chic, the fashions date from 1890 to contemporary times. Unfortunately, the last day for the show is August 15.

However, I will simply have to salivate over the Youtube.com clip below, while cultivating a fine excuse that will allow me to blow off work/school/friends/family all other commitments to fly off to the East Coast!

Currently, I am just too infatuated with Dr. Martens!

I already purchased the Red “Darcie” heels and I will say that

they are a fantastic shoe. A sort of ugly alternative to a heel

and more feminine version of the original 90’s combat classic.

Anyway, they are releasing these epic floral Dr. Marten

heels for Fall ’10, along with the black boots with the white

piping. Of course, the completely ostentatious gold oxfords

and enormous oxford style black heel are currently available.

The Cult of the Clog

It is at this point that I will openly admit that I have probably lost my marbles!

Not too long ago (aka 4 months ago) I could never have imagined clogs coming within an inch of my feet. After all, images of old gardening women, rhubarb and

garden gnomes came to mind when I heard the term, "clog".

And yet, now these almost orthopedic/nursing home shoes

seems to want to clunk their way into my closet.

On Sunday I woke up and realized that although February is still technically considered to be winter, it was a whopping 75 degrees out!

Anyway, I used this unusual weather as the perfect excuse to break out my newly thrifted dress. Among the shirts and blouses, I somehow found it.

The bag is a vintage score from some funky old store in Arizona...

And the shoes? Surprising, not vintage or thirfted. Circa Joan & David to be precise.

Madewell Madness

And so, the highly anticipated collection, Alexa Chung for Madewell, is released!
Well, not until February 16th which is only a few hours away at this point.

Here are the photos:

Now, I will say that I had anticipated a bit more creativity from this line. Obviously, Miss Chung is not a designer nor is Madewell a couture line. And yet, ostensibly it feels a bit like each piece is everything I have seen here wear before. Is it just me, or are those overalls just screaming Current/Elliot? That aside, I will admit that the Peter Pan collars are a bit troubling for me. Eventually, I am confident that they will catch on as a big trend. Sad news for those who practically live in them already!

On a lighter note, I do see the potential for some well tailored basics. Those velvet hot shorts are looking a bit too perfect for words. Lastly, I have decided to ride along on the clog train…I do love the ones in this shoot!
But who am I to judge! I have not seen the collection yet! I do live near a Madewell, so I might pop in on the 16th to take some pics and sniff it all out.

Normally I do not like leaving RIP messages regarding someone I have never met. I always feels that I am encroaching on the family's personal feelings of grief and overstepping my boundaries...

However, I simply cannot fathom the thought of not doing a post on the late Alexander McQueen.

His work always impeccable and his designs were so unconventional but always spectacular. I remember first falling in love with high fashion because of his incredible runway shows.

The first collection that ever inspired me was his Spring 2005 collection, as seen above. Ever since then, I had followed his work religiously and always waited with bated breath for whatever he would release next.

This is devoted to, in my opinion, one of the greatest designers of the 21st Century.

A friend from New York tipped me off to this store awhile back, but it wasn't until relatively recently that I came to the realization that they had a website.
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is a small boutique run by Judi Rosen. And, dare I say, I love every piece in the store! Alas, I have never been to the actual store on the East Coast, but the stuff on the internet looks marvelous. From the 40's inspired romper to the offensively green shorts to the round sunglasses, I think this store is a must hit should I visit NYC anytime soon!

Thrifting

Yes, indeed friends, it should be noted that Thrift Stores are just about the greatest things on Earth. Well, that and Going Out of Business Sales!

Went into some weird Mom and Pop thrift store after work. Foolishly shoved into the shoe section, this little belt was amongst a sea of Croc-like monstrosities and glittery BeBe flip flops. Tempting, tempting, I know. However, the belt beckoned me. Then I saw it was $5, and I knew it was meant to be.

Oh, and my brown boots are also Thrift Store gems from a few months ago! Hard work and a keen eye can yield many amazing finds!

Paired with a H&M gingham skirt and a vintage Peter Pan collar blouse, and key necklace, I will say that I have nothing but pure, unadulterated love for the Thrift Store!

After watching the ever harrowing "Rosemary's Baby" last night, I couldn't help but recall the Chloe Spring/Summer '07 (three years?? Seems like only yesterday...) collection. Yvan Mispelaere crafted a brilliantly feminine yet modern collection, and I was thoroughly in love with every piece.

Yes, I should be posting on '10 collections, but I still cannot help but smile every time I view this show.

I often find myself feeling overly irritated about the fact that our society has become one so enamored by celebrities. I strongly dislike the fact that so many “celebs” can simply put their name on an article of clothing if they have absolutely no knowledge of fashion or anything outside of their social bubble, for that matter.

Now, I guess I will be a total hypocrite. While Alpha 60 is not owned, nor run by anyone that fits the description above, they do feature very “well knowns” on their designs. However, I will say that I am a fan of their Godard and River shirts. Sure, that might go against what I have previously mentioned, but I do have a love for Godard’s films and I have always thought River was brilliant in all of his films.

So, if you don’t mind wearing someone famous, you should check them out. I guess I would have an excuse to buy, right?

Had some free time today, so I hit up Opening Ceremony because, after all, a sale was beckoning. Alas, I left the store empty handed because apparently there is no way that I can squeeze my size 8 feet into a size 6 shoe, even if they are 70% off!!!
